OP-ED: Illinois population decline should be a wake-up call

Illinoisans have been hearing their state is shrinking for five years now. But new figures released Thursday say something they’ve never heard. From Walla Walla to Waco, there are 383 metropolitan statistical areas, or MSAs, across the country. Illinois is home base for 10 of them. From July 2017 to July 2018, all 10 shrank. That’s never happened before. And many other figures from the new release are disturbing. No other state in the lower 48 saw all of its […]

For first time, population in all Illinois’ metro areas declines

SPRINGFIELD/WASHINGTON (Illinois News Network) -- U.S. Census data released Thursday showed the population in every one of Illinois' metropolitan areas declined in the past year for the first time. The Chicago metropolitan area, which includes suburban cities and portions of Wisconsin and Indiana, reported the largest population decrease in the nation, shrinking by an estimated 22,068 people. That represents 0.23 percent of the area’s total population of about 9.5 million people. Population in the Danville area shrank by 1.26 percent, […]

Syverson says now is the time for Illinois to push forward on gaming expansion

SPRINGFIELD (INN) -- One state lawmaker says now is the time for Illinois to push forward on gaming expansion. State Senator Dave Syverson, R-Rockford, says a bill that would allow for up to six new casinos in the state already has passed the Senate and it’s simply waiting for the House to weigh in. “We just need the speaker to allow a vote in the House,” Syverson said. “The last two years he hasn’t allowed his members to vote on […]

McCALEB: Reasons to be thankful in tax-and-spend Illinois

(Illinois News Network) -- Many Illinoisans will be hard-pressed this week to find something to be thankful for with regard to a state government that is taxing and spending its way to insolvency. The General Assembly passed a $5 billion income tax increase well beyond the end of the scheduled legislative schedule that went into effect retroactive to July 1. And yet the spending plan that was approved alongside that tax hike still is nearly $2 billion out of balance. So […]

Illinois state Sen. Dave Syverson supports gas tax hike

SPRINGFIELD (Heartland Newsfeed) -- Illinois state Sen. Dave Syverson (R-Rockford) joins state Rep. Dan Brady (R-Bloomington) in supporting an increase in the state’s gas tax. “It may make sense to be looking at a small gas tax increase, something maybe as little as five cents,” Syverson said. Syverson is echoing his House Republican colleague Dan Brady, who said “[a gas tax increase] may absolutely be where we can come together. Whether that’s a five percent increase, I don’t know. That’s […]
