Pritzker outlines deliberate process for re-opening Illinois

SPRINGFIELD/CHICAGO (The Center Square) – Gov. J.B. Pritzker said Monday he has had some preliminary discussions with industry leaders on how to go about re-opening the state when it is time to lift the existing stay-at-home order, which has shuttered large swathes of the state's economy. The governor said the priority would be the health of employees. “I have been talking to industry leaders because the most important thing is safety and health,” Pritzker said. “People are going back to […]

Libertarian Party of Illinois seeking ballot access from state board of elections, Gov. Pritzker

CHICAGO (Heartland Newsfeed) -- The Libertarian Party of Illinois (LPIL) is petitioning the state's election authority for November's general election, a press release states Thursday. They're asking the Illinois State Board of Elections to grant the party ballot access. The release cites the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak as a result of the March 9 disaster proclamation by Gov. JB Pritzker. Additionally, combined with the Centers for Disease Control recommendations, it makes ballot access petitioning impossible as a result. New political parties, […]

Illinois businesses buckle down amid growing coronavirus concerns

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) — As fears over the spread of the coronavirus grow, Illinois’ retail and service sectors are preparing for already thin profit margins getting thinner. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced Wednesday the cancellation of the city's St. Patrick’s Day parades, turning away what Gov. J.B. Pritzker said brought more than a million people to the city. “We don’t take it lightly,” Lightfoot said. “Nonetheless, we concluded that holding a parade at this time posed an unnecessary risk to […]

Bipartisan group of lawmakers, advocacy groups push for Illinois fair map amendment

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) -- A group of lawmakers from both sides of the aisle and several advocacy groups is turning up the pressure on the Illinois Legislature to pass an amendment to allow voters to change how legislative districts are drawn in Illinois. The goal is to prevent gerrymandering of the state's political boundaries. In Illinois, politicians control how legislative boundaries are drawn every ten years. This type of redistricting has been criticized as politicians picking their voters rather than […]

COMMENTARY: Political New Year’s resolutions for 2020

I wrote a Letter to the Editor which was sent out to roughly a dozen publications over the weekend, but only one took the time to publish it. I feel it was appropriate to share: As we enter a new year, a new decade and yet another election cycle, the ongoing question from fed-up voters keep ringing in my mind: “Why don’t we have other candidates running for office? These candidates on the ballot are awful!”   It’s an easy […]
