ROSEMONT, Ill. (UPI) -- The Big Ten Conference on Tuesday postponed fall sports -- including football -- for the 2020 season due to the coronavirus pandemic. The conference is the first among the Power Five conferences to announce a postponement of fall sports due to COVID-19. The ACC, SEC, Big 12 and Pac-12 are expected to announce fall plans later this week. Men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's and women's soccer, and women's volleyball are the other fall […]

Iowa caucuses Monday night as another candidate drops out

DES MOINES (The Center Square) -- After months of campaigning and hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising, the Iowa caucuses finally arrive Monday night. Supporters of John Delaney, however, will have to find a new candidate as the former Maryland Congressman announced Friday he was dropping out of the race. Delaney said he did not want to take support away from other moderate candidates heading into Monday night, although he was consistently polling at 1 percent or less. Delaney […]

Small business owners prepare for minimum wage hikes in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) -- Small business owners around the state are preparing for two minimum wage hikes in 2020. The minimum wage for most employees in Illinois will increase to $9.25 on Jan. 1 and then will jump to $10 an hour in July. “Our members, especially those in downstate small communities, are very concerned because so many of them are the small cafes and restaurants, the small retailers who provide a lot of entry-level jobs for folks in […]

Back-to-school sales tax holiday unlikely in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) -- Illinois is unlikely to join the list of states that offer a “back-to-school” sales tax holiday. Sales tax holidays are periods when specific goods are exempted from state, and sometimes local, sales taxes. Many states schedule the events for August when “back-to-school” shopping largely takes place. Illinois held a one-time sales tax holiday back in 2010, but Rob Karr, president of the Illinois Retail Merchants Association, said it didn’t provide the boost some expected. “It […]

Healthcare takes center stage during second round of Democratic debates

DETROIT (UPI) -- Healthcare dominated the conversation during the first night of the second round of 2020 Democratic presidential debates. The field of 10 candidates was split on the idea of implementing a strategy such as Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders' Medicare for All plan that would enroll every American in a government-run national health insurance system funded by taxpayers and other options that would allow Americans to retain their private insurance plans. Former Maryland Rep. John Delaney opened the debate […]

Midwestern farmers devastated by massive, uninsured flood losses

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (UPI) -- Hundreds of millions of dollars of crops destroyed in this month's massive Midwestern flooding events were not insured, farmers say. And the losses could leave many without sufficient income to continue farming. "This uninsured grain issue is really starting to affect people," said Jeff Jorgenson, a western Iowa corn and soy grower whose farm flooded when the Missouri River broke over its banks March 12. "It could end a farming career," he said, his voice was […]

Proposed law would make it easier for out of state teachers to work in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD (INN) -- The latest proposal to solve Illinois' teacher shortage could have schools, once again, looking across the state line. Illinois schools need teachers. Every fall, school districts say they can't find enough qualified, licensed teachers to fill their classrooms. The Illinois State Board of Education said the 2017-2018 school year started with about 2,000 open teaching positions across the state. Gov. Bruce Rauner, about a year ago, signed a reciprocity law that will cut some of the red […]
