KNAPP: There’s no such thing as a “must-pass” bill

“Congress,” The Hill reports, “is barreling toward a veto showdown with President Trump over the mammoth must-pass annual defense policy bill.” At issue: The annual National Defense Authorization Act, which as usual has little to do with actual defense. NDAA bill to fuel more corporate welfare into the military-industrial complex Trump says he’ll veto the NDAA if it requires military bases named after Confederate generals to be re-named, as Congress desires. He also says he’ll veto the bill if it doesn’t […]

Appeals court rules against Donald Trump’s asylum ban

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- A Federal appeals court denied President Donald Trump's request to strike down a lower judge's order to block the administration's asylum ban for migrants who enter the country illegally. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals late Friday said Trump's new rules limiting who can seek asylum go against U.S. law, and are attempt at an "end-run around Congress." "Just as we may not, as we are often reminded, 'legislate from the bench,' neither may the Executive legislate […]

KRISTIAN: No, Donald Trump is not a libertarian president by any measure

The American Conservative is a reliable source of thoughtful commentary, and an outlet to which I am happy to contribute on occasion. For these reasons I was prepared to give a fair reading to a Monday article, “Donald Trump: The Most Libertarian President Since Silent Cal,” by Ryan James Girdusky — as much as the headline inclined me otherwise. Unfortunately, no reading can make Girdusky’s case persuasive. President Trump is not libertarian by any measure, not even the extremely low bar of being the most […]

COMMENTARY: Trump IS NOT remotely close to being a “libertarian” president

Shortly after 11 PM last night, I received an alert from Google with an as-it-happens update (as that is a way we do find our news sometimes) and the headline from this particular article made me want to puke because the word was taken way out of context. I'm referring to an article written by The American Conservative and Red Alert Politics columnist Ryan Girdusky, entitled "Donald Trump: The Most Libertarian President Since Silent Cal." Nothing can be further from […]

President Donald Trump signs $15.3 billion hurricane disaster relief, debt ceiling measure

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- President Donald Trump on Friday signed a package to provide $15.25 billion for hurricane disaster relief and raise the debt limit, the White House press secretary said. Sarah Sanders posted on Twitter that the president signed the measure "providing much-needed support for storm survivors." The measure providing aid for hurricanes Harvey and Irma -- tied to a temporary debt ceiling extension deal between President Donald Trump and congressional Democrats -- passed the House by a vote of 316-90 earlier Friday. Included in […]
