Illinois lawmaker files bill to end automatic pay raises for legislators

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) -- A state lawmaker has filed a bill to end automatic pay hikes for state legislators. Every year, lawmakers must vote to freeze their own pay, or it goes up according to the statute. In 2019, lawmakers left that language out of the budget and got raises of about $1,600 a year. State Rep. Mike Murphy’s bill would remove the automatic cost-of-living adjustments and require lawmakers to vote for legislative pay hikes. “We’re one of the better […]

The ongoing impact from the deadliest wildfire in California history

For 17 days, the worst wildfire in California history blazed through everything it met: bushes, trees, cars, homes and yes, sadly even people. On November 8, 2018, a wildfire was caused by a utility company PG&E, which started in Butte County in northern California. The fire finally burned out and came under the control of the authorities on November 25. In such a short time, it managed to kill 85 people, destroyed 18,804 structures and buildings and burnt through 153,336 […]

UCSF study: Quitting smoking could save California’s MediCal program $2.6 billion per year

SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) -- Researchers say they think cutting smoking in each state by 1 percent in a year would lower the cost to taxpayer-supported Medicaid by $2.6 billion the following year, according to findings published Friday in JAMA Network Open. "While 14 percent of all adults in the U.S. smoke cigarettes, 24.5 percent of adult Medicaid recipients smoke," said Stanton Glantz, who runs the tobacco research center at University of a California at San Francisco and study author, in […]

Federal judge rejects citizenship question on 2020 census

NEW YORK (UPI) -- A Federal judge ordered Tuesday that the Trump administration remove a question about U.S. citizenship on the 2020 census. U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman said Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross exceeded his authority under Federal law by adding the question to next year's census. "Secretary Ross's decision to add a citizenship question in the 2020 census -- even if it did not violate the Constitution itself -- was unlawful for a multitude of independent reasons and must be […]

Illinois congressional delegation to shrink after 2020 Census

SPRINGFIELD (Illinois News Network) -- Continued population loss means Illinois will have to say goodbye to one at least one of its 18 congressional representatives after the 2020 Census. Election Data Services recently released its annual projections of which states will gain and lose U.S. Representatives at the next turn of the decade. The projections show Illinois’ 18th Representative will almost certainly be removed and given to another state, said Kimball Brace. Other states projected to lose seats include Alabama, California, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, […]

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Thursday it was able to trace an E. coli outbreak to a California farm. The FDA's investigation identified a positive sample result for the outbreak strain in the sediment of a local irrigation reservoir used by Adam Bros. Farms in Santa Barbara County. The agency said the farm has been cooperating with the outbreak investigation and hasn't shipped any romaine lettuce since Nov. 20. So far 59 people in 15 […]

COMMENTARY: Voter choice and candidate suppression needs to become a criminal offense

(Heartland Newsfeed) -- Illinois is unfortunately known for political corruption and the suppression of voter and candidate choice. It's been a common and deceptive practice that has been going on for decades. 2018, unfortunately, is no different. As of several hours ago, a warning was given by the Libertarian Party of Illinois that the Illinois Republican Party is up their usual tricks again trying to throw the party slate off the general election ticket. PUTTING THE WORD OUT: Republicans are […]
