Democrats call for ban on assault weapons in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD (Illinois News Network) -- Illinois Democrats have introduced an ambitious gun control bill that would ban the sale or unregistered possession of dozens of firearms labeled as assault weapons. Sen. Julie Morrison (D-Deerfield) introduced Senate Bill 107 Wednesday, which would prohibit a range of rifles, pistols and shotguns and require every such weapon in the state to be registered with the Illinois State Police. Owners would pay a $25 fee for that registration. A person found in possession of one of the […]

Pritzker plans to spend us into oblivion,” Bailey, the Republican newcomer from Xenia, stated in regards to the passage of Senate Bill 3531 during the lame duck legislative session, which increases the annual salaries of state departmental workers, associate directors and secretaries by 15 percent. “Then […]

State proposes regulations on hemp crops

SPRINGFIELD (Illinois News Network) -- Illinois farmers are one step closer to growing hemp. The Illinois Department of Agriculture released the proposed regulations for growing industrial hemp on December 28. Although Governor Bruce Rauner signed the Industrial Hemp Act in August, planting was delayed pending regulations. Industrial hemp is used for CBD oil, food, clothing fiber and food, according to Liz Rupel, the policy organizer at Illinois Stewardship Alliance. “We are pretty pleased with what the Department of Agriculture produced,” […]

Continued out-migration from Illinois could mean dire consequences

DECATUR (Heartland Newsfeed) -- When it comes to Illinois' shrinking population, the numbers reported don't tell the full story. This is what representative-elect Dan Caulkins (R-Decatur), who was elected to succeed Bill Mitchell (R-Decatur) last month, believes when it comes to one of the largest shrinking populations in the nation. "It's not just that we're losing people," Caulkins stated in a news release. Caulkins stated that the shrinking population involves many of the state's workforce in the private sector, which […]

GUEST EDITORIAL: Pensions keep Illinois in fiscal turmoil

Goodbye to Illinois’ $130 billion pension hole. Now it’s $133 billion. And getting deeper. Sometimes the clearest warning about Illinois’ fiscal crisis can be communicated using numbers, sometimes with a well-chosen phrase. Here we present both, as reminders during the period before a new Democratic governor takes office with a Democratic mega-majority, that the state’s messes will only worsen. Until lawmakers take decisive action. First, the awful numbers: For several years we’ve cited the figure of $130 billion to represent Illinois’ […]

OP-ED: Two wrongs don’t make a right in ‘Fight for $15’ debate

The "Fight for $15" an hour is back in Illinois, although it's not likely to be much of a fight and this time there's a bit of a twist. Democratic Gov.-elect J.B. Pritzker is telling anyone who will listen that he wants to gradually raise the state's minimum wage to $15 an hour starting in the first six months of his term that begins in January. Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner vetoed the last legislative attempt to gradually raise the state's […]

Bill to clear some past marijuana convictions gets new support

SPRINGFIELD (Illinois News Network) -- A ranking member of the Illinois Senate has picked up a bill that would allow people to clear low-level marijuana convictions from their record with permission from a judge. Lawmakers decriminalized possession of small amounts of marijuana in 2016. When the law changed, possession of up to 10 grams of marijuana in Illinois became a civil matter rather than a criminal one. The 2016 change didn't address those who had already been convicted of the crime. […]
