Illinois lawmakers hear pleas to end jail bond

CHICAGO (Public News Service) -- Gov. J.B. Pritzker recently revealed his intention to end the use of cash bail or what is known as "money bond" in Illinois, and it's an effort advocates for criminal justice reform hope state lawmakers will get behind. Sharlyn Grace, executive director of the Chicago Community Bond Fund, argued the use of money bond is a form of wealth-based discrimination that contributes to racial inequality. She added pretrial detention can have ripple effects throughout a […]

Don Harmon elected Illinois Senate President, succeeding John Cullerton

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) -- Democrats elected state Sen. Don Harmon (D-Oak Park) to be Illinois' new Senate President on Sunday. Harmon said at a news conference after being elected that he will push for a graduated income tax. Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago) announced in November he planned to retire. Cullerton resigned Sunday. “I’ve enjoyed working with all of you, Republicans and Democrats alike,” Cullerton said. “We’ve accomplished a great deal together. And now it’s time for me to move […]

Illinois lawmaker files bill to end automatic pay raises for legislators

SPRINGFIELD (The Center Square) -- A state lawmaker has filed a bill to end automatic pay hikes for state legislators. Every year, lawmakers must vote to freeze their own pay, or it goes up according to the statute. In 2019, lawmakers left that language out of the budget and got raises of about $1,600 a year. State Rep. Mike Murphy’s bill would remove the automatic cost-of-living adjustments and require lawmakers to vote for legislative pay hikes. “We’re one of the better […]

Skillicorn, GOP colleagues call for special legislative session to tackle ethics reform

SPRINGFIELD (Heartland Newsfeed) -- Several members of the Republican caucus are calling for a special session in order to bring ethics reform to the General Assembly, but it doesn't seem likely it will happen this month. State Rep. Allen Skillicorn (R-Crystal Lake) recently called for a special session on Twitter, citing that "ending the culture of corruption" is key and "is not rocket science." Skillicorn and four other colleagues -- Brad Halbrook (R-Shelbyville), Blaine Wilhour (R-Beecher City), Chris Miller (R-Oakland) […]

The remarks, allegedly made by District 45 Rep. Diane Pappas (D-Itasca), have been mostly met with silence from her colleagues -- remarks to a pro-life group of concerned citizens that stated that castration of men could be a solution to abortion in response to concerns about House Bill 2495, otherwise known as the Reproductive Health Act. Democratic Rep. Dianne Pappas under fire for castration remark on abortion bill

State Rep. OP-ED: Illinois population decline should be a wake-up call

Illinoisans have been hearing their state is shrinking for five years now. But new figures released Thursday say something they’ve never heard. From Walla Walla to Waco, there are 383 metropolitan statistical areas, or MSAs, across the country. Illinois is home base for 10 of them. From July 2017 to July 2018, all 10 shrank. That’s never happened before. And many other figures from the new release are disturbing. No other state in the lower 48 saw all of its […]
