NOKOMIS — Authorities found no explosive devices after investigating a report of possible explosives at an abandoned home in Nokomis. The home, located on S. Union Street, was near Shane Cole Memorial Park in Nokomis. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department said the Nokomis Police Department received information about possible explosive devices at the residence. CENTRALIA, Ill. — Centralia police arrested a 19-year-old man after a series of large early-morning disturbances Saturday in Centralia and nearby Wamac. Cedric Powe, of the South Brookside area of Centralia, is in custody at the Marion County Jail. CAHOKIA HEIGHTS -- Multiple people, including a firefighter, were injured Saturday in a three-vehicle crash involving a Cahokia Heights fire truck on Illinois Route 3. The crash occurred at about 1:10 p.m. near the intersection of Route 3 and East Fifth Street, according to the Cahokia Heights Fire Department. The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning for Madison County and much of the St. Louis region. The warning takes effect at noon Sunday, August 9, and remains in place until 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 12. Forecasters expect heat index values as high as 109 degrees. SALEM — Deuel Veterinary Services will close at 5 p.m. Aug. 20 after 15 years serving Salem and the surrounding area.
