STONINGTON — The Stonington village board met for its regular meeting on Monday, October 7, at the village hall. Among its short agenda items were the discussion of golf cart ordinances and concrete work being done at one of the village’s businesses.

There have been several reports recently that golf cart drivers have been failing to yield to vehicles, semis, and farm equipment.

Stonington Chief of Police Travis Peden stated that his department must be more strict on the golf cart ordinances moving forward.

“We’ve received complaints on failing to yield to vehicles, which is stated in the golf cart ordinances that they have to yield to all vehicles,” Chief Peden said.

Peden noted complaints of golf cart operators failing to yield at stop signs and operators driving on sidewalks.

“There’s also age,” Chief Peden added. “Supposedly, there are some [people] under 16 driving golf carts.”

Peden noted that the call to be stricter on the ordinances is because they want to prevent accidents involving golf carts.

“Golf cart [operators] are going to have to realize [that] it’s a privilege to be on the road. You have to yield to the other vehicles and stop at the stop signs,” Peden said. “There is no side protection on a golf cart. If you get T-boned, it’s you getting hit, not the golf cart.”

Business request for sidewalk materials approved

Beer Vault Saloon LLC asked the board to cover the cost of materials in order to fix the sidewalk in front of their business.

That request, which was for $2,200, was approved without objection.

Public comment on missing animals in Stonington

A concerned citizen inquired the board on who to call if they spotted a missing dog.

The citizen noted that a neighborhood dog had gotten loose the prior weekend, staying in their yard for roughly two hours. They tried contacting the dogcatcher through the number listed on the village website but did not receive a callback. Fortunately, they were able to locate the owner of the dog. However, the concerned citizen wanted to know who to call in the future.

The board discussed whether the listed dogcatcher was still working for the village or if this was a matter that Christian County Animal Control could handle in the future.

Village President Bruce Dowdy said the board would look into the matter and update the website if needed.

“We will do a little investigating into that first to see if the dog catcher is still here, and if not, then about the County. We’ll get the numbers changed,” Dowdy said.

The next village meeting will be held at the village hall on Monday, Nov. 4 at 7:00 p.m.
