NOKOMIS — After a hiatus of several years, the Nokomis Historical Society is once again starting up.
According to former president JoAnn Keele, the Society was started in 1992 by herself and Ken Wiseman with the intent to collect and preserve Nokomis’ history. In its original format, the group had 20 members with a passion and love for hometown history.
The group was instrumental in having the old newspapers stored in the attic of the now-former Free Press-Progress building transferred to microfiche.
The group was also responsible for the creation of the Nokomis Memorabilia Museum, which was initially housed in the lobby of the Nokomis Savings Bank. However, due to renovations of the bank in 2022, the museum was moved to the Nokomis city complex.
Membership began to decline after the passing of Wiseman. His family’s sharing of many photos and articles would once again spark a renewed interest in reviving the organization.
The revived organization met for the first time in January and most recently met on Tuesday with new members stepping forward.
The organization meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m. at Nokomis Public Library, 100 N. Spruce St. The next meeting will be on March 12.
