MEXICO — Residents of Mexico will likely experience some temporary interruptions of water service, discolored water, and/or lower water pressure.
Missouri American Water is working on an ongoing water system improvement project, worth $2.4 million, to enhance the water service reliability to Mexico customers.
These improvements include replacing 4-inch, 6-inch, and 10-inch cast-iron water mains installed in the 1950s and 1960s. They will be replaced with 8-inch and 12-inch PVC water mains.
Affected areas include 2,400 feet along N. Craig, MacFarlane, and Eastholm Streets, 3,300 feet along E. Orange and E. Vine Streets, and over 1,700 feet alone E. Love Street between Woodland Street and Highway J.
Work began in December on the Craig/MacFarlane/Eastholm project, with work completion to come by the end of March. Work started this month on the Orange/Vine/Love/Woodlawn/Highway J project. Both projects should be completed by late spring.
Replacing pipes with a history of main breaks are reaching the end of their useful lives increase service reliability to customers and local businesses, according to Patrick Kelly, Mexico operations manager for Missouri American Water.
“We know these projects will help us continue to deliver clean, safe, and reliable drinking water, both now and for generations to come,” Kelly said.
In addition to main replacement work, crossings, hydrants, valves, and other services will be updated. These added services will provide additional support for local firefighters.
“Missouri American Water’s investments in our city’s water infrastructure supports fire flow to enhance community fire protection,” stated Mexico public safety director Susan Rockett said.
Other projects include a directional drill replacement of 12-inch PVC main to replace the 10-inch cast-iron main. The area is under Norfolk Southern Railroad ownership. That project has a completion estimate for April.
Work will occur between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Reclamation of property and land suffering damage from the projects is expecting completion in spring 2022.
