Triad too much for Mt. Vernon

MT. VERNON — Triad’s triple-option offense had the Mt. Vernon Rams seeing triple the number of Knights Friday night in a 66-7 home-opening loss at Ken Hunt Stadium.

The Knights jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the second quarter before the Rams got on the board with a 64-yard touchdown reception by Anthony Lash Junior to cut it to 17-7, but it all went downhill after that for Mt. Vernon.

Nic Funk’s short TD run gave the Knights a 24-7 lead at the half. Triad then dominated the third quarter outscoring the Rams 35-0 to lead 59-7 after three. The Knights tacked on another score in the fourth for the final margin of victory.

Triad improves 2-1 on the season. Mt. Vernon falls to 0-3. The Rams will open South 7 play next week at Althoff.

Mascoutah spoils Centralia’s home opener

CENTRALIA — After opening the season with a pair of road wins, the Centralia Orphans faced quite a test in their home opener, as state-ranked Mascoutah came to town. The 6th ranked Indians played spoiler, handing the Orphans their first loss of the season, 42-7.

Mascoutah quarterback Chase Hanson had a huge night accounting for all six Indians’ touchdowns–four rushing TDs, a passing TD, and an interception return for a score.

The Indians rolled up 349 yards of offense while holding the Orphans to just 141 yards.

For the second week in a row, the Orphans’ player of the game was senior Davin Tabor. Tabor had a pair of interceptions to go along with 4 catches for 54 yds. Centralia’s lone score came on a 9-yard run from running back Amir Johnson.

Mascoutah improves to 3-0, while the Orphans fall to 2-1. Centralia will host Carbondale next Friday night in the South 7 opener for both teams.
