With final presidential election results currently pending with ongoing recounts and litigation, the 2020 election cycle isn’t quite over. However, local eyes turn to municipal, school, and lesser governments with the April 6 consolidated election in Illinois.
Nominating petitions are still available for any and all open seats through the conclusion of the filing period. However, those taken on the final day must be filed on time or candidates will not be on the ballot.
The office of mayor and one open commissioner position will be up in the 2021 special election. Both positions have an unexpired two-year term until 2023.
Michael Holliday received the appointment as interim mayor following the resignation of mayor Russ Foster. As a result, Holliday would have to abdicate his commissioner position.
Following his swearing-in, Holliday would appoint Louis Stauder to the commissioner seat.
This does not impact the other three commissioners, who are Jonathan Nash, Ann Brookshire, and Derek Durbin. All three will continue in their capacities through the 2023 election.
According to City Clerk Rachel Hill, only one candidate packet has been picked up at City Hall.
Four seats on the Board of Education are up in 2021. Those seats are currently occupied by Jim Eisenbarth, Dennis Bauman, Steve Janssen, and Carl Fesser.
It is currently now known whether Eisenbarth, Bauman, Janssen, or Fesser are seeking re-election.
All municipal offices in the City of Witt are up in 2021. The office of mayor, currently held by James VanOstran, is the top of the municipal ticket.
The offices of treasurer and city clerk are also up. They are currently held by Sonia Hudson and Nancy Hughes respectively.
Three of six city council seats are up for a full four-year term. The remaining three are up for a two-year unexpired term ending in 2023. John Bauerle and Randall Lowe currently represent Ward 1. In Ward 2, Kenny Vallelonga and Tim Taylor are the aldermen. Finally, in Ward 3, David Cearlock and Jay Martin are the aldermanic representation.
Petitioning is still ongoing across Montgomery County and has been since September. The filing period for petitions will be from Monday, Dec. 14 at 8 a.m. through Monday, Dec. 21 at 5 p.m.
