Waste management is a far more complex process than the general population often recognizes. Not all waste is the same, and as such, not all waste requires the same methods of disposal. Depending on the size and type of waste, special waste management services may be required. This is to ensure that the disposal of materials is in a safe and efficient manner.

The following is a guide to different waste management methods that explores the safest means of disposal. There are different methods for a variety of substances, from everyday waste to potentially hazardous refuse.

Recycling

In addition to composting, recycling is the most environmentally friendly means of waste disposal currently available. Recycling a variety of materials safely is possible, though some materials must meet some special requirements.

Recyclable waste may include any items made from plastic, paper, cardboard, or glass. These items must be clean and uncontaminated by food products or otherwise hazardous materials. These are the most common recyclable goods, but other items can be recycled through special services.

Batteries, electronics, and materials with oil residue can be recycled. However, recycling them properly often requires the use of special waste management services.

Landfilling

Landfilling is the most common waste management method, as it accommodates all potentially hazardous or unrecyclable items. Though landfills accommodate a large variety of waste items, there are disposal restrictions. Some large mechanical items, for instance, are not acceptable for landfill disposal.

These may include car batteries, refrigerators, and washing machines. Other large items such as mattresses and couches are acceptable for landfill disposal. Items that may hold gas, including car tires and gas tanks, are also unacceptable for landfill disposal. However, most small household items are completely safe for landfill disposal.

Incineration

As we stated, hazardous waste materials are unfit for disposal in landfills and recycling plants. These hazardous materials include any items that could put waste management employees or the environment at risk. Examples of such items include pesticides, undiluted cleaning products, or byproducts of manufacturing facilities.

Often, the safest way to dispose of these items is through incineration. This method limits the number of hazardous materials and their wrongful disposal in landfills. Additionally, this also ensures that no harm comes to any waste management employees as a result.
