SALINA CRUZ, Oaxaxa, Mexico (UPI) — The U.S. National Hurricane Center said the remnants of Tropical Storm Calvin could drop up to 20 inches of rain in some parts of southeastern Mexico.

The NHC said Calvin dissipated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday. From 5 to 10 inches of rainfall are forecast in the Mexican states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, Guerrero and Veracruz. At least 10 inches of rain has already fallen in the Salina Cruz city in Oaxaca. Up to 6 inches of rain is expected to fall in the states of Tabasco, Morelos, Mexico and Michoacán.

“The remnants are moving toward the northwest near 5 mph and this motion is expected to continue today. Maximum sustained winds are near 30 mph with higher gusts,” the NHC said in a statement. “These rains are expected to produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.”

The NHC said tropical cyclone activity is not expected during the next 48 hours.
