FORSYTH — Forsyth residents will have an opportunity to voice their opinions about the possibility of a cannabis dispensary opening within the community. The first meeting occurred Thursday evening with a second meeting on the subject to take place on July 11. Both meetings will be at 6 p.m. at the Forsyth Public Library at 268 S Elwood St.
The meeting will allow residents to ask questions to the village government as well as investors who are interested in opening the dispensary. Illinois Health and Wellness LLC has been confirmed to be one of the interested cannabis businesses in locating in Forsyth, according to other outlets.
Forsyth opted out of allowing cannabis sales in 2019, along with the majority of Macon County communities, including Decatur, and the unincorporated parts of the county. Currently, Harristown, Maroa, and Argenta are the only three municipalities in the county that allow for cannabis dispensaries. Depending on the opinions of the residents, Forsyth may reconsider.
“What I’ve seen so far on social media and emails appears to be pretty split,” Forsyth Mayor Jim Peck said.
Peck is personally undecided about allowing dispensaries and wants to hear the community’s thoughts before forming an opinion. Peck would only vote in the event of a tie from the Forsyth Village Board.
